Leveraging experience to reduce waiting times

David Jones-Stanley, Customer Operations Director at Liaison Workforce, shares his thoughts on the new NHS Emeritus platform going live, and the positive impact it can have on waiting lists...

Following extensive collaboration and detailed testing, the NHS Emeritus platform is now live and matching peri-retired and retired clinicians to fill shifts and deliver care.

With the new Labour government pledging an additional 2 million appointments per year as a first step towards an ambitious 5-year goal to ensure no one waits longer than 18 weeks for treatment, NHS Emeritus is helping to fill specialism gaps and ensure that experienced clinicians are available to provide the care needed.

As someone who has personally benefitted from NHS services and lifesaving treatment, this initiative really hits close to home for me. Experienced clinicians are stepping up to fill gaps and ensure quality care; to date, more than 250 clinicians have signed up to NHS Emeritus, meaning remote and onsite appointments are readily available in a wide range of in-demand specialist areas, including Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Paediatrics, and 34 others.

Since Amanda Pritchard announced the commencement of the NHS Emeritus project late last year, we’ve been hard at work to ensure it is operational, and we’re delighted to now see it begin to match clinicians and providers together for the benefit of patients. For example, one clinician shift was applied for in just 46 minutes – proving the appetite of these experienced clinicians to the undertake shifts and provide assistance, as well as how easy it is to access and use the platform.

We look forward to seeing the platform begin to positively impact waiting lists and support trusts to meet their targets.
